Sifting Clues from Lake-Bottom Muck

When diatoms die they sink to the bottoms of oceans and lakes and form deposits. When scientists unearth these deposits locked up in sediment cores the type and amount of diatom shells in a given layer will tell us whether the corresponding period was warmer or cooler!
