Since the spring of 1992, the Environmental
Committee of Ottawa South has undertaken many initiatives to
improve Brewer
Park, in Ottawa. ECOS's goal was to create a sustainable
nature reserve in the heart of the city of Ottawa. Some of their
enhancement activities included the construction of fish and
turtle habitat, restoration of the shoreline through the planting
of trees, and the construction of a footbridge, a lookout and
an interpretation centre.
As a result, Brewer Park in now a biodiversity
haven on the Rideau River! The mixture of fast rapids, slow
moving water, and deep and shallow pools is ideal for a diversity
of aquatic species. The revegetation of the shoreline has
created areas for wildlife to inhabit, and areas for humans
to observe it. [24]
