Genomes: Wonders and Worries
Regina, Saskatchewan, February 19, 2004
"The field of genomics impacts all aspects of our lives. It is really the study of our very beings."
- Lorne Babiuk, Director of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization |
Genomics is a complicated and controversial subject for most people. It raises a number of thorny and contentious ethical questions. What effect will this research have on our children and grandchildren? Is the commercialization of genetic research hurting the science? Who should have access to my personal genetic information?
To complement the Prairie opening of The Geee! in Genome exhibition at the Saskatchewan Science Centre, almost 100 Regina-area residents gathered in the Kramer IMAX Theatre to voice their questions, comments and concerns about genomic research.
A distinguished panel of experts, including Lorne A. Babiuk, Timothy Caulfield, David Elliott and William Crosby, was there to help answer these complicated and important questions. Edward Willett, a CBC Radio science columnist, acted as the evening's moderator.
