The Basics

Heredity

While humans are 99.8% genetically similar, we are even more like members of our own family. We pass on a copy of our genome to our descendants and, as a result, all humans inherit half of their mother's and half of their father's genome. Do you have your father's nose? Do you have your mother's eyes? Do you have your great aunt's mouth? Family photos can help you discover such similarities.

There is only one race - the human race!

With the sequencing of the human genome and the mapping of human genetic variations, scientists have confirmed that there are no clear genetic divisions of races. Cultural and social differences distinguish one group from another much more than differences in genes. Indeed, genetic variations found within one "racial group" are often greater than those found between two different groups.

In the next 60 seconds your body will produce enough new DNA that if linked together would stretch 100 000 Km.
