You will explore the dramatic undersea world of whales in this breathtaking exhibition—alive with stories, intriguing objects and interactive science for adults and children alike.

Learn about whales as the amazing animals they are, and also discover how people connect with whales.

This visually striking exhibition explores the diversity, biology and adaptation of whales to life in the oceans. The focus is on the whales—including dolphins, porpoises and ancient relatives—of the South Pacific. Central to the exhibition are two mounted sperm-whale skeletons. Not only do they make a magnificent natural-history exhibit, but these specimens are revered by the Māori, whose relationship to whales is a significant topic in the exhibition. Indeed, part of the title, "tohorā", means "whale" in Māori.

People of the South Pacific have long had profound cultural, spiritual and practical connections to whales. This exhibition also tells these rich stories, particularly those of the Māori, and includes both traditional and contemporary perspectives. Also explored are the ways in which whale strandings are moving, mysterious and significant. And, the exhibition doesn't shy away from talking about human impacts on whales.

All ages will find something of interest in Whales Tohorā. It offers a powerful combination of accessible, interactive science, cultural storytelling and appealing events and activities.
